Picture of Maria

I drew this picture from my own perspective and imagination of Maria, including the text:
“She had black curly hair, very long and everything about her was so beautiful- not just her fine red dress, but everything.”
But of course my picture is in black and white, that visualizes an older fashioned theme and takes you back in time, around the late 1950s decor and style of furniture also. I had always pictured her to be elegant and slender as well as still childish and having a sense of fun in her life. Maria has rosy, blushed cheeks, a curve of the ends of her lips to form a slight smile, a dandy dress with fancy flats and an honest pose in my drawing. She is about 11 years old, only a year younger than David, but her description and personality in the book makes her seem much younger since she had a care-free life surrounded by her big family.

Maria is energetic and loves to play when she is around her brothers, but with David, she can relate about being lonely sometimes as the only girl in her family. When he speaks to her, she acts like a different person. Maria is understanding, patient and always willing to explain everything to David that he does not know about or saw. She looks up to David as a role model, and everything he does is right to her.
In my picture, Maria is ready to listen to your problems with you, a person that you can confined in, that is the vibe I get from reading about her in the book. She is a very good-hearted and intelligent person from my perspective. Unlike her brothers, Maria set aside time to play and wants to learn about life other than hers, a life like David's, without wealth or home.

  1. Hey Tamara,

In this section of the story, it mentions multiple times that Maria is beautiful, dainty, and has very light and tiny features. I understand your perspective of how Maria would be elegant and slender, as similar characteristics are mentioned throughout this section. I cannot exactly comment on how you imagine Maria (facial features and body) as to those are your own personal thoughts and can’t be changed by someone other than you. I completely agree to your thought that she has a care free life and she acts and does things that would assume to be ‘quite childish’, and not what a normal 11 year old girl would do. Since she has many siblings, the parents obviously cannot pay specific attention to her behaviour and try to improve or change it. She can almost do whatever she wants.

I also agree with your statement that she can relate to David in specific ways, and how they act differently when they are together. Maria must try to teach David as best she can on different subjects (e.g. books, music, globe, etc.). On p. 118, the father and mother are trying to figure out why Maria is listening to classical music with David, even though she has not liked any form of music ever, and even if she did, she would probably not listen to it with her brothers. Your statement that David is Maria’s role model is completely true, and that everything he does is perfection in her eyes.

To me, your last sentence shows deep thought and requires “out of the box” thinking, which you have shown. In the text, it states that she likes to play and have fun with her brothers, but is solemn with David. It is almost as if she is studying him to deduce what a life with barely any resources is like (David’s life). Maria certainly demonstrates kindness, caring, and intelligence during this section as well.

    Great writing+picture+blog!!

  4. Hi Tamara,
Well drawn picture of Maria. She looks lovely and has a kind expression on her face. She does look a bit older than ten or eleven. Your response demonstrates that you really understood what Maria brought to David's story.
